Mapeza To Name His New Warriors Captain Ahead Of Liberia Tie

Zimbabwe Warriors Interim coach, Norman Mapeza is expected to name his new Warriors captain any time soon ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifyer against Liberia at the National Sports Stadium on June 11.

The former Warriors skipper who announced his first 25-man provisional squad last week, is forced to make arrangements for a new captain after the demise of captain, Willard Katsande and his vice-captain Cuthbert Malajila from the national team over allegations of spearheading the boycott of Warriors farewell dinner just before the team's departure to AFCON 2017 tournament in Gabon.

With fitting candidates like, Partson Jaure, Danny Phiri, Marvelous Nakamba, Knowledge Musona and Onismo Bhasera all among the provisional squad to face Liberia, Mapeza is definitely not short of options.

Although they were fears of a boycott in Warriors camp ahead of the June 11 tie,  in solidarity with  banned players, assistant coach, Wellington Mupandare is satisfied with the commitment shown so far.

“We have not encountered any problems at all. It has just been the social media’s negative stories and in any case, I put it across that nothing official came from Zifa regarding that position and we are on course preparing for that game,” said Mpandare.

Belgium based Warriors talisman, Knowledge Musona is expected in camp on Wednesday and the South African based contingent of, Kudakwashe Mahachi, Evans Rusike, Ovidy Karuru, Eric Chipeta and Khama Billiat are believed to be in camp already with only Onismo Bhasera expected to join the rest of the squad on Sunday after his Confederations Cup match with Supersport United in DRC.

Mapeza was forced to drop the England-based trio of Tendayi Darikwa, Macaulay Bonne and Kundai Benyu whom he had drafted in his squad to face Liberia, after the players failed in the last minute to confirm their availability for the first Africa Cup of Nations 2019 qualifyer match in Harare.

The other suitable candidate for the Warriors captaincy, Tanzania based Elisha Muroiwa who is rumored to be the fifth victim of Zifa's ban on the 'boycott dinner ringleaders' was also omitted from the provisional squad to face Liberia.
