Mhofu Reinventing Welsh-Based Young Midfielder Alec Mudimu As A Centre-Back - And Its Working!

It might have looked like a misfortune after the Warriors missed the services of regular center-back Costa Nhamoinesu, who failed in the nick of time to find a connecting flight to Zambia for the tournament, but it could be a blessing in disguise after the reinventation of young Wesh-based midfielder Alec Mudimu as a centre-back on his Warriors debut proved fruitful.

In trying to solve his defensive shortcomings in the absence of veteran Czech-based centre-back Nhamoinesu, Coach Sunday Chidzambwa had to tinker and tailor with his squad to strengthen his defence line thereby assigning the 22-year old Cefn Druids midfielder Mudimu with central-defensive duties against a talented Zambian side in their 2-2 semifinal battle last Wednesday.

As fate would have it, Mudimu marshalled the central defence alongside Teenage Hadebe, like he was born for the position.

"I had been particularly worried about our centre back area," said Chidzambwa speaking to The Herald from Kitwe in Zambia.

But Teenage and Mudimu did very well and i think our problems in that department may have been solved now," said Chidzambwa, Zimbabwe's most decorated coach who used to be a great defender during his playing days.

Chidzambwa admitted he was impressed by Mudimu's performances including other debutants of Adam Chicksen and Nyasha Munetsi whom he also mentioned as good players for the team.

"I was impressed by some of the guys who were playing for the first time and those that i had not had a chance to closely look at especially Mudimu who was p!aying centre-back and Chicksen who is a good left back," said Chidzambwa.

With good hieght and huge appearance, Mudimu who plays as a midfielder at Cefn Druids could find himself following in the footsteps of players like, Manchester City's Vincent Kompany, Barcelona's Javier Mascherano who have seamlessly converted from midfielders to become successful centre-backs.

Warriors will face Angola in a third place encounter at Levy Mwanawasa stadium this afternoon.
